New York State Computer Science Certification Information

Standards & Certification

 New York State has made several exciting policy updates, including new CS standards and a certification process for teachers. The information and links below are a synopsis of recent changes, many of which are still being rolled out. CSTA chapters and groups from across NYS are working together to provide resources to schools, so stay connected for more information and for opportunities to get involved.


NYS Computer Science and Digital Fluency Standards

  • New standards website with information spread across many resources and roll out timeline 
  • K-12 Standards approved as of December 2020 to be implemented as a CS mandate across NY State by September 2024
  • Community Resource: Unpacking the NY CSDF Standards


CS Statement of Continued Eligibility (SOCE) - See NYSUT Fact Sheet for more information

  • Information about eligibility and how to apply for your SoCE when it becomes available in 2022
  • New Deadline: Teachers must teach a CS course (as defined by your district and the list of eligible courses on the SoCE website), apply for the Computer Science SoCE in TEACH, and pay the application fee on or before September 1, 2023


NY CS Certification

  • CS Teachers
    • NYSED TEACH has begun accepting certification applications but so far only from approved Teacher Prep Program Candidates
    • Pearson is starting to develop a certification ‘Content Exam’ for NYS CS teachers
  • Current CS Teachers
    • A certification pathway for current CS teachers is being developed and will be announced
    • CS Certification Requirement Regulation from NYSED and DASA training requirement for teachers certified prior to 2012
  • Industry Experience
    • A certification pathway is also being developed for individuals who have a bachelor’s degree or higher and also have had three or more years of experience working in a position that requires the skills of a computer scientist.


NYSED Updates: Sign up for the “Computer Science” Content Area Notification Service

  • Encourage teachers, administrators, and organizations to join their local CSTA Chapters
